AKUMAL is located about 60 miles south of the crowded coast of Cancun; along Mexico's Caribbean Coast or the Riviera Maya.  And centrally located between Playa del Carmen and Tulum.  Akumal is a charming & peaceful retreat.

Akumal is the home of Centro Ecológico de Akumal CEA, a non-profit group dedicated to environmental marine research, education and sea turtle protection.

Transportation. You will take Highway 307 South.  The sign says Tulum and/or Chetumal. This will take you to all points south on the Riviera.  Akumal is approximately one hour south of the Cancun airport.  Rental Cars are available at the airport. Please make sure you have full insurance coverage for both liability and collision while driving in Mexico. Taxis are available at the airport in Cancun. Restaurants.  Enjoy the delightful local restaurants in Akumal.  To name a few...   La Lunita Restaurante, paradise on the Beach. Turtle Bay Café & Bakery, our favorite!
Lucy's Kitchen, the best shrimp tacos and homemade ice cream.  Lol-Ha, great food and right on the water!
Dive.  Directly offshore is the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the 2nd largest in the world. You can see stunning coral reefs, sea turtles and tropical fish.  Right in Akumal, you can dive with Akumal Dive Shop or Akumal Dive Center. Or excellent snorkeling is also right outside your door at LaBahia.
Fishing.  The Akumal Dive Shop has experienced Captains that will take you to the best fishing spots.  Or try fly fishing in Sian Ka'an.
Shopping.  Shops.. from local arts & crafts to beach wear and hats, right in Akumal. There is  a Farmers Market every Wednesday and Saturday with tropical fruits and veggies. Two small grocery stores in Akumal with everything from bread, milk, oreo cookies and ice cream to beer and tequila.  Mega shopping in Playa Del Carmen about 20 miles north. Check out the new grocery store in Playa, Soriana.
Spa and Yoga.  YOGA in Akumal with classes daily.  Or try Peak Gym for a great work-out.  Or have a massage at  Budha Spa.  Or do some Golfing in Puerto Aventuras.
Phone/Internet.  Keep in touch at Cyber Akumal for internet access and phone calls.  And most US cell phones will work in Akumal.  Free wireless internet access at the condo.
Money.  Most businesses accept US Dollars. Banks are located in Tulum and Playa Del Carmen.  Money exchange is available at the TSA in Akumal.  There is an ATM machine in the Super Chomak Grocery Store (though not always working). Another ATM is located at Bahia Principle a couple miles away.
Water Parks
Xcaret. Underground rivers, sea turtles, snorkeling, botanical gardens, coral reef aquarium, spectacular shows.
Xel-Ha. Incredible and magical water theme park created by the Mayan gods.
Yal-Ku Lagoon.  Great snorkeling in Akumal, and just a short walk from the condo!

Mermaids?  Actually, it was some sea cows that started that business (sort of a practical joke) and then the sailor's imagination just took it from there.  Don't worry though, plenty of other creatures down here to pique your interest.
